All Sports Founder Presented Award

By Leon B. Crews, Monday, June 14, 2010 - Sentinel Staff Writer

On Saturday, May 22, 2010, the Rowe Taylor, Jr. Foundation held their second annual Hero Award Dinner and Fundraiser.

Among those recognized as recipients were: Lauren Dungy, Hero Award; Doretha Edgecomb, Hero Award; Tyrone Keys, Trailblazer Award; and Deacon Charlie Ball, the Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award.

Keys attended Mississippi State University where he played football. He graduated with a degree in Education, and from 1983 to 1990, he played defensive end with the Chicago Bears, San Diego Charges and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 1991, he founded All Sports Community Service, Inc. to provide challenged youths guidance in their pursuit of higher education.

Ms. Carolyn Taylor, who founded the organization to honor her late husband, Rowe Taylor, Jr., said they like the good things Keys has done in the community.

“So many young people have benefitted from Tyrone and his organization. He’s very unselfish when it comes to helping young people.

“We try to present the award to those people who reflect the kind of character my late husband admired and that people like Tyrone has.”

Ms. Taylor’s daughter, Shon, was one of Keys’s first students and was the first female student he assisted with a full scholarship.
